Guidelines: The Midwives Model of Care copyrighted definition and trademarked logo

The Midwives Model of Care -- the logo and the definition -- were developed as tools for advocating midwifery. Both the trademark and the copyrighted "Model" are maintained by the Midwifery Task Force, a non-profit organization whose main purpose is to promote the Midwives Model of Care nationally. As part of this purpose, the Midwifery Task Force has made the investment in protecting the logo as a trademark so that its meaning and value can be established and preserved.

License needed to use the logo

A license is required to reproduce the trademarked logo (the design of the symbol plus the phrase). For public education purposes, organizations may apply for a simple and inexpensive license agreement ($20 annually). With the license comes an electronic file with the logo (which will always have ™ after "Care"). For more information, a copy of the license agreement, and a license application, contact attorney Jim Henderson at jhenderson@jagersmith.com or 617-951-0500.

Note that use of the logo on items for fundraising or other "for profit" purposes requires a separate license agreement.

Don't have a license yet? Use these guidelines!

You must have a license to reproduce the logo, and you are encouraged to get a license. A license is not needed for publishing the definition itself, without the logo, but the definition should always appear in its entirety and should always followed by the copyright line, like this:

The Midwives Model of Care

The Midwives Model of Care is based on the fact that pregnancy and birth are normal life processes.

The Midwives Model of Care includes:

  • Monitoring the physical, psychological, and social well-being of the mother throughout the childbearing cycle
  • Providing the mother with individualized education, counseling, and prenatal care, continuous hands-on assistance during labor and delivery, and postpartum support
  • Minimizing technological interventions
  • Identifying and referring women who require obstetrical attention

The application of this woman-centered model of care has been proven to reduce the incidence of birth injury, trauma, and cesarean section.

If you don't have a license, do not reproduce the logo (the symbol plus "Midwives Model of Care" arranged in a pyramid).

Whether or not you have a license to use the logo, when just the phrase "Midwives Model of Care" (with capital letters) is mentioned in text, it does not need any trademark or copyright symbol after it.

Promotional Materials Available

Some related promotional materials are being produced. You can use these printed materials even if you do not have a license; a license is only needed when someone wants to use the logo in materials or documents that they are going to produce or have printed. For more information about other Midwives Model of Care materials, contact Pam Maurath at pmaurath@attglobal.net or 866-439-4837 (eastern time).

If you have questions or special situations, do not hesitate to contact Jim Henderson about using the logo, Pam Maurath regarding materials, or CfM for Midwives Model of Care brochures.
