Direct entry midwifery is legal in California, with licensure available since 1997.

Direct entry midwives have attended home births in California for decades. After 17 years of legislative efforts, a licensing law was passed in 1993, and licenses became available in 1997. There are now more than 100 licensed midwives practicing in the state.

Birth Network of Santa Cruz County

Birth Network of Santa Cruz County is a non-profit grassroots organization that provides education, information and advocacy for mother-friendly pregnancy, birth, and post-partum care for all women. Birth Network uses the Coalition for Improving Maternity Services (CIMS) Mother-Friendly Initiative as a guide for community projects, including annual report on perinatal care, referral and outreach services, and community networking.
